Great Moments in Hockey Speak

HockeySpy.ca can safely guarantee that NHL players and coaches will be blurting out their share of funny, dumb and downright startling comments throughout the upcoming 2026-27 season.

How can we be so bold with that prediction? Past history, of course.

🏒 Devin Cooley, Calgary Flames — 2025: Cooley explaining what he tells himself to calm down and put hockey in perspective:

“Nothing matters, nobody cares, we’re all going to die.”

🏒 Igor Shesterkin, New York Rangers — 2026: Asked about GM Chris Drury’s letter to Rangers fans explaining the team’s direction:

“Honestly, I didn’t read the letter, because I don’t speak English.”

Um, Shesterkin made the comment… in English.

🏒 Seth Jarvis, Carolina Hurricanes/Team Canada — 2026: Asked what he thinks when he looks at his Olympic silver medal:

“Sell it on Craigslist.”

Jarvis immediately laughed it off and explained that he was proud of the medal. Perhaps the fact that his team dominated the game and still lost tarnished the medal’s meaning.

🏒 Adam Foote, Vancouver Canucks coach — 2025: Foote wasn’t impressed by analytics:

“They’re just looking at numbers from people that could be in Russia in a basement, having cigarettes and cashews…”

Why cashews? Apparently only Adam Foote knows.

🏒 Paul Maurice, Florida Panthers coach — 2024: After winning the Stanley Cup:

“I never hugged so many sweaty men in my life!”

Maurice can always fall back on a stand-up comedy career when he’s done with hockey. Or when hockey is done with him.

🏒 Oliver Moore, Chicago Blackhawks — 2026: Moore celebrated his 21st birthday by taking on the much bigger Nikita Nikishin in his first NHL fight. His review of the evening:

“It’s a good way to ring it in. Got beat up. Won a hockey game. That’s all that matters.”

🏒 Brady Tkachuk, Ottawa Senators—2025: After the Senators’ first morning skate following the Christmas break:

“Everyone smells like a brewery”

🏒 Tom McVie —NHL coach: Well-travelled coach who had stops behind the bench with Washington, Winnipeg and New Jersey on his tendency to get fired:

“I can be out of town in 20 minutes; 30 if I have stuff at the cleaners.”

🏒 Harry Neale—NHL coach and TV analyst: No list can be complete without a couple of zingers from Harry:

“We couldn’t win at home and couldn’t win on the road. I couldn’t think of anyplace else to play.”

“My players don’t like my practices, but that’s OK, because I don’t like their games.”
