Wayne Gretzky attempted a rehab interview when he joined the 100% Hockey podcast earlier this week. When host John Shannon—a volatile former TV producer who fancies himself a hockey expert for some odd reason—brought up the apparent Gretzky–Trump alliance that has angered Canadians from coast to coast, Gretzky’s response made it clear he just doesn’t “get it.”
Yes, Wayne, we know you’re still a Canadian. And yes, we know you can’t control what the big orange weirdo in the White House says. But the choice to saunter down to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago playpen and don a MAGA hat was entirely yours. If a picture is worth a thousand words, those spoken back home in Canada would mostly be classified as profane.
Of course, being an NHL suck-up/groupie, Shannon hardly pressed the issue, opting instead for a softball set of questions. Then again, it might not have mattered. The time to speak up was many months ago, at the height of Trump’s ignorant and repetitive “51st State” nonsense. Back then, Gretzky—as they say in hockey lingo—turtled.
You might not be an American citizen, Wayne. But you sure didn’t act like a Canadian when you could have—and should have—either.
