A New Shanaplan. Or Shanaplans.

The question of the day is most certainly this: Where do I go to apply for one of those “strategic advisor” jobs?”

You know, just like the new gig former Maple Leafs boss Brendan Shanahan just landed.

From the Toronto Sun’s Mike Gantner:

“Former Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan is joining former MLSE boss Larry Tanenbaum’s Kilmer Sports Ventures as a strategic advisor in that group’s PWHL interests.

Kilmer Sports Ventures and Ilitch Companies of Detroit became the first two outside investors in the PWHL back in June.

The single-entity-owned PWHL is part of Mark and Kimbra Walter’s extensive sports properties, with those and the PWHL Advisory Board making all league decisions since its inception.

Kilmer Sports Ventures owns and invests in the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo, French Ligue 1 football club AS Saint-Etienne and is a strategic capital partner in the PWHL.

The belief is that when the Walters eventually begin divesting themselves of the 12 teams they own in the PWHL, capital partners like Kilmer and the Ilitch Companies will become owners in their respective markets.

In that sense, this announcement is more about the future than the present, although there’s plenty of relationship-building to do for Shanahan, who has been exclusively on the men’s side of professional hockey for his entire career.”

If you think getting paid to hand out advice is cool, you’ll be outright drooling when you realize that being a professional advice-giver does not prevent you from earning additional money working elsewhere. From CBC.ca:

“One of the things that was important to me, but also important to Larry, was I continued to do my work with the NHL and other projects, like I just finished with Hockey Canada,” said Shanahan in a phone interview. “The attraction for me is to be involved in the game in any way I can help, and Larry felt the same way.

Woah! Lots of pay for limited effort!

If you’ve got a young teenager at home, struggling to settle on a career path, don’t suggest they consider the standard careers like medicine or law…tell them to work towards becoming a professional strategic advisor. They’ll thank you forever.

One last thing: We know why continuing with other projects would be important for Shanahan, but why does Larry Tanenbaum seem equally keen on paying for part-time help? It seems like he could use a strategic advisor to advise him on strategic advisors.
